Thanks to everyone who has read (and hopefully enjoyed) Welcome to the Machine. Unfortunately, due to lack of Patreon support, the comic will be going on indefinite hiatus for the foreseeable future. You can still read my other webcomic, Danger Zone One, which is currently running (and could also use your support). — Midnight
What a shame. It showed great promise. I hope you will continue and even if it’s just quick drafts.
Very few webcomics can become self-sufficient within a few chapters, and most of those either have outside support (such as being linked and recommended by someone extremely popular) or due to the author having already built up an audience from their previous work. I say “a few chapters” because the weekly update schedule means that these three chapters took about a year to update, where on a MWF schedule they would have only taken a few months. The slower schedule isn’t a problem if you are willing to wait to “make it big”, but it does affect the speed of popularity growth so it is worth mentioning.
Most authors use side and top advertisements to at least pay for the site costs and eventually supplement their income with sales of related items (such as t-shirts and buttons) and eventually use Cons as a dual advertisement/income source position. Even so, most who “live” off of webcomics either have close to a decade in the field or have a supplemental income source (such as a spouse or government subsidies).
This webcomic does have the potential to “make it big”, but most of that depends on how things develop and how much the story can be kept interesting over time. Open storyline elements give the story somewhere to go when the current ark and conflicts see some level of resolution, so be willing to throw in as much tertiary stuff as you want so long as the story continues to choose its path through the confusion (rather than getting lost in it). If you are wanting to “get famous quickly” than this particular story lacks the meme-worthiness or pop-culture references to get it noticed quickly, though that can be hit-or-miss in how well those come across or how long they will remain applicable. The better option is to focus your art in an area of personal interest so that the depth of your interest can add to the depth of your story so that the whole thing can pull people in.
Honestly, I don’t know what your are of interest in, but I look forward to reading your artwork when you finally pin it down.
Good luck!
